What does Dolly Parton have to do with entrepreneurship?

When you think of an entrepreneur, you probably think of Steve Jobs or Elon Musk.

But I think of Truvy Jones.

Who? I know, you probably don’t know (or remember) who she is…

Truvy Jones was the small-town, saucy salon owner, played by Dolly Parton in the smash hit, Steel Magnolias.

The salon was decorated with pink, on top of pink. It operated out of Truvy’s Louisiana home with her trusty apprentice—or “glamour technician," Annelle.

It only takes a few of Truvy’s famous lines to know she was a battle-tested entrepreneur who knew her business, studied her customers, and analyzed her market.

For example:

I can usually spot a bottle job at 20 paces”

Entrepreneurs learn early to do market research and competitively monitor changes in their industry. The beauty industry isn’t alone when it comes to businesses that are beat out by do-it-yourself products that are cheaper and more accessible. Your knowledge, expertise and trust will attract and retain customers amidst the more accessible, less expensive alternatives.

“Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.”

Entrepreneurs are conflicted, a lot. Confident, yet questioning. Fearless, but fearful of the next move. An entrepreneurs’ passion keeps them in the game. But that same passion can sometimes lead to emotions that are puppeteered by the rejection of an investor.. Word of a new competitor in the market.. A negative customer review. Remember that tomorrow is always a new day, with new energy to channel your emotions for the next big step forward.

“It takes some effort to look like this”

Dolly Parton was perfectly cast for this role! She has done the work to be successful! Every entrepreneur will tell you that long hours, blood, sweat and tears are required. But don’t miss that while you work IN your business—you also need to work ON your business. Don’t miss the energy and efficiencies that will come when you take a class to learn, grow or lead. Make the time-- an hour or two to be present for seminars, mentorship sessions, online learning and growth opportunities.
